  • Understanding the True “Fear” (Worship) of God

We have heard it said to “Fear God and Serve him only”, and the “Fear of God is the beginning of wisdom”; but what is the correct meaning of “Fear”?

Are we to be afraid of God? Wouldn’t that make us avoid him?  If he wants to draw near to us, why would he ask us to fear him?

This sounds to me like a contradiction. Why would a God of Love need to use Fear?

What does the Bible say?  Deuteronomy 6:13 says: “You shall fear the LORD your God and serve Him…”

When Jesus was in the wilderness being tempted in Luke 4:8; Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy 6:13 and says “You shall worship the LORD you God and Him only you shall serve.”

Also in Matthew 4:10: “You shall worship the LORD your God and Him only shall you serve.”

I’m letting the Bible interpret the Bible.  And who better than to let Jesus interpret the Bible?

I believe that the Jesus is interpreting this verse to what the true meaning of the word “Fear” is: Worship

David said this about fearing God in Psalm 130:4: “But there is Forgiveness with You, that You may be feared.”

Interesting, he doesn’t says “there is Wrath with You or there is Judgement with You” He says Forgiveness…

Worshiping God is the true understanding to the word Fear.

Worship God and Serve Him only, the Worship of God is the beginning of wisdom, There is Forgiveness with You that You may be worshiped.

    Amen! Hallelujah! God is GOOD!

*Update* Some other verses to consider:

1 John 4:8: “Whoever does not love, does not know God, because God is Love”

1 John 4:18: “There is no fear in Love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”

1 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
